If you are a soloprenuer (i.e. in business by yourself) you’ll agree that your business journey can be a lonely road. Often it’s hard to know where to look for help, especially when it comes to raising your online expert profile.
We are all expected to be experts in all facets of our business, including PR, but for many of us even knowing where to start to raise our profiles can be confusing … and expensive should you hire a PR company.
Over the years I have created a great brand profile for myself through magazines. I have found that owning or working for magazines has given me credibility, exposure and loads of industry contacts. Now, I am not suggesting we all go out and start our own magazines, but it is one great way of raising your expert profile.
However it doesn’t have to be that time consuming or labour-intensive: here are three easy ways to grow your expert profile that anyone can do;
- Approach online magazines, real-world magazines and women’s blog sites to be a guest contributor
Now this approach is a little hit and miss but if you are patient and persistent it will certainly pay off. Becoming a guest contributor means exposure through networks other than your own and a great way to get your name out there. If are aligned with a great brand, it will reflect on your brand too. In terms of approaching publications, keep in mind that they are busy and no doubt are contacted all the time. The key to is to be SPECIFIC to their publication – do your research on the types of content they provide readers and look for relevant sections you would write for. And lastly … follow up. Oh, and follow up again!
- Pick a niche – and stick to it
The mistake many of us make is trying to do too many things and tackle to many topics to be an expert in – often for fear of missing out on potential opportunities. This actually works conversely for your profile. Your expert profile comes about when you choose one topic and stick with it. You can find variety within the niche, but stay consistent on one area … at least until you nail it! Be known for ‘something’! It could be money, PR, fashion, beauty, technology, but try and get as specific as possible.
- Blog … and blog often
Nothing creates an expert faster than someone who talks about their industry – often. The more that your message is heard, the more you become known as an expert in that area. And by blogging often (I mean at least weekly, in fact, daily if you can) means that your site is being filled with content-rich articles full of your area of expertise. This is great for SEO and bringing traffic to your site, plus it gives you loads of fodder to send to other publications, online magazines and even TV shows for possible topics that you can be interviewed about.
Do the three things above and you are well on your way to raising your online expert profile!
